About "Etthara Etthu"

“Etthara Etthu” from Comrade Kalyan is a fierce protest song built around resistance to oppression, caste and class inequality, and the demand for dignity. The opening immediately challenges the idea that ordinary people should silently accept humiliation. Its recurring “laayilappaa laayilo” phrasing gives the verses the character of a Telangana folk protest song, while the lyrics repeatedly move from suffering toward collective action.

Bhaskarabhatla uses stark contrasts to show inequality. One side lives in a “murikivaada,” while the powerful live in mirrored mansions, with the lyric suggesting that those buildings themselves were made possible by the blood and labour of the oppressed. Images such as ants marching against a hissing snake and a single spark capable of reducing a forest to ashes turn seemingly powerless people into symbols of collective strength. The song then confronts discrimination more directly, questioning who gave anyone the authority to deny others education, positions, touch, footwear, or basic human respect.

The refrain “Etthara Etthu” literally urges people to raise something, progressing through the raised fist, agricultural and working tools, and finally the erra jenda, or red flag. The fist functions as the clearest symbol of solidarity and resistance, while the repeated ending makes the song feel like a mass rallying cry rather than an individual complaint. Sung by Nalgonda Gaddar Narsanna (Narasanna), with lyrics by Bhaskarabhatla and music by Vijai Bulganin, “Etthara Etthu” uses folk-rooted language and confrontational imagery to portray people refusing submission and asserting their right to equality and dignity.
